Written by Lena Waithe and directed by Melina Matsoukas, the thriller is visually stunning. That means the costumes of the couple on a run (so much more than a Black Bonnie and Clyde) and cast is worth the watch of the film alone. Opening up an all white ensemble and box plait braids, Jodie Turner-Smith calls to mind the style decades of the late Sixties and Seventies. The turtleneck, the monochrome, all reference those decades without being cliche. According to a Vanity Fair article designers such as Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, Dapper Dan, and Aurora James of Brother Vellies contibuted to the costume for the film. In her second costume change the film keeps the mood Seventies in a Zebra mini dress and animal print boots most likely by Brother Vellies. She is elegant, sensual, stylish and powerful. The film is utterly stylish. This is the first film Matsoukas has directed, a first too for Waithe screen writing wise and a first for Shiona L. Turini the costume designer, formerly a style editor. Go see it and be prepared to want to vamp up your closet.
